Agafay Desert Travel Tips & What to Expect

Agafay is a rocky desert of bare hills and stony plateaus, not a sea of sand dunes, about 40 to 45 minutes by road from Marrakech. Most visitors come for half a day or an evening: pickup at the hotel, a quad or camel ride, sunset over the Atlas Mountains and, in the evening packs, a Moroccan dinner with live music, back in town around 11 pm. Our core Agafay desert tips are simple. Choose the 4 pm departure for the sunset light, or 9 am in summer heat for the quad. Wear closed shoes and bring a warm layer, because evenings cool down fast. Remember that you must be 16 to ride a quad alone, children can ride a camel from age 5 with an adult, and the buggy driver needs a car licence. The Quad + Camel + Dinner pack at €75 covers the full experience, with hotel transfer included and free rescheduling in bad weather.

What the Agafay Desert actually is

The Agafay Desert is a stony desert of bare, rolling hills just south-west of Marrakech, roughly 40 to 45 minutes by road from the city. Expect hard, pale ground, dry riverbeds, plateaus and wide views of the High Atlas, which are often capped with snow in winter. Do not expect the tall golden dunes you see in Sahara photos.

This matters for how you prepare. On a stony desert, the dust rises behind the quads, the tracks are bumpy, and the ground is hard underfoot. Sandals that work on a beach are a poor choice here. The upside is that Agafay is close enough for a half day or an evening out, with no long drive and no night in a tent unless you want one.

If you are still weighing up the two deserts, our comparison of Agafay and the Sahara goes into the trade-offs. For an overview of every excursion type, start with the complete guide to Agafay tours from Marrakech.

How long you need

Most of our activities fit into a half day or an evening:

  • A 1-hour quad ride takes about 2 h 15 hotel to hotel.
  • The Quad + Camel pack takes about 4 hours in total.
  • The evening packs run from a 4 pm pickup to around 11 pm back at your hotel.
  • The VIP Pool Day runs from 9 am to about 7 pm.
  • The Imlil & Agafay pack covers 2 days and 1 night, with a night in a luxury camp.

So you do not need to sacrifice a whole day of your Marrakech stay, unless you choose the pool day or the two-day trip.

Agafay weather by month

Agafay shares the climate of Marrakech: hot, very dry summers, mild sunny winters and cool nights for much of the year. The table below uses long-term averages recorded at Marrakech airport (1991 to 2020 normals). Treat the figures as approximate. Out on the open plateau, with nothing to hold the heat and a breeze on the hills, evenings can feel colder than the number suggests.

Month Typical daytime high Typical night low Rain Our tip
January about 19 °C (66 °F) about 6 °C (43 °F) a few rainy days Sunny days, cold evenings: warm jacket for dinner
February about 21 °C (69 °F) about 8 °C (46 °F) a few rainy days Same as January, snow often visible on the Atlas
March about 24 °C (75 °F) about 10 °C (50 °F) wettest month on average Pleasant days, keep a rain-friendly plan B
April about 26 °C (79 °F) about 12 °C (54 °F) occasional One of the best months for everything
May about 29 °C (85 °F) about 15 °C (59 °F) rare Great, but the sun is already strong
June about 34 °C (93 °F) about 18 °C (64 °F) very rare Quad at 9 am, camel at 4 pm
July about 38 °C (100 °F) about 21 °C (70 °F) almost none Hottest month: morning quad or pool day
August about 37 °C (99 °F) about 21 °C (70 °F) almost none As July; evenings are the comfortable part
September about 33 °C (90 °F) about 19 °C (66 °F) rare Still hot at midday, lovely at sunset
October about 29 °C (84 °F) about 16 °C (60 °F) occasional Excellent month, mild evenings
November about 23 °C (73 °F) about 11 °C (51 °F) a few rainy days Fine days, bring a fleece at night
December about 20 °C (68 °F) about 7 °C (45 °F) a few rainy days Short days, cold nights, festive season

Which season suits you

Spring (March to May) and autumn (late September to November) are the easy seasons. Days are warm without being harsh, and you can do any activity at any time of day.

Summer (June to August) is perfectly doable if you play with the clock. Morning is the cooler slot for the quad, and on the camel ride page we recommend the late afternoon departure in summer so you avoid the worst of the heat. The evening dinner packs are at their best in summer, because the temperature drops to something pleasant once the sun goes down. The VIP Pool Day, with its infinity pool and cold drinks, is built for those hot months.

Winter (December to February) has blue skies and often snow on the Atlas peaks, which makes for the best photos of the year. The catch is the evening: once the sun drops, it gets genuinely cold, so a proper jacket is not optional.

Morning or sunset: choosing your time of day

Most single activities and the Quad + Camel pack have two departures, 9 am and 4 pm. Evening packs and buggy rides start in the afternoon only.

9 am departure 4 pm departure
Temperature Cooler, the best choice in summer Warm, cooling down towards sunset
Light Clear and bright, sharp Atlas views Golden light, then the sunset
Crowd feel Calmer start to the day The most popular slot
Best for Quad in summer, families, early risers Camel ride, photos, couples
Can you add dinner? No, the evening packs start at 4 pm Yes, with the dinner packs
Buggy Not offered Pickup around 3:30 pm, sunset descent

If you only have one slot in your trip, we would point most people towards the afternoon. The sunset over the hills is the moment people remember, and the evening packs let you add dinner and the show without a second trip. The exception is high summer, when the morning quad is far more comfortable.

What to wear in Agafay

Dress for dust, sun and a temperature drop after dark. Here is what works.

For the quad and buggy

Closed shoes are required on the quad and the buggy; this is part of our booking terms, not just advice. Trainers are perfect. Long trousers are better than shorts, both for the sun and for the dust thrown up by the vehicle in front. A light long-sleeved top protects your arms from the sun.

For the quad, helmet and goggles are provided. A scarf, buff or Berber-style cheche over your nose and mouth makes the dusty sections much more pleasant. On the buggy ride, wear comfortable clothes, closed shoes, sunglasses and sunscreen.

For the camel ride and horse riding

Comfortable trousers make the saddle easier. Closed shoes are still the smart option on stony ground. For horse riding, a helmet is provided and recommended for everyone, whatever your level.

For the evening

This is the tip people ignore and then regret. Even after a hot day, the average gap between the afternoon high and the night low is about 13 to 17 °C (compare the columns in the table above). Bring a fleece or warm jacket for dinner in the tent and the drive back. From November to March, think proper coat rather than light cardigan.

Packing checklist

A small daypack is enough. Here is our checklist for a half day or an evening in Agafay:

  • Closed shoes (required for quad and buggy)
  • Long trousers or light trousers you do not mind getting dusty
  • Sunglasses
  • Sunscreen and lip balm
  • Hat or cap for the camel ride and stops
  • Scarf, buff or cheche against the dust
  • Warm layer: fleece or jacket for the evening
  • Water bottle (tea and water are included on several activities, but extra water never hurts)
  • Phone or camera, with a strap or a zipped pocket
  • A small amount of cash in dirhams for personal extras
  • Car driving licence, if you are driving the buggy
  • Any personal medication
  • Tissues or wet wipes, useful after a dusty ride

Leave behind anything fragile or valuable that you do not need. A large bag is awkward on a quad or a camel.

Safety and age rules

Our rules come straight from our terms and conditions, and we apply them on every departure:

Activity Minimum age or requirement What it means in practice
Quad 16 to ride alone Younger children ride as passengers behind an adult. No licence needed.
Buggy Driver needs a valid car licence Without a licence, choose the quad. The buggy is priced per 2-seat vehicle.
Camel From age 5, with an adult The guide leads the camels by the rope.
Horse Beginners welcome The guide adapts the pace to the group.
All motorised rides Closed shoes, briefing Helmet and goggles provided, safety briefing before every departure.

The quads are automatic, so you do not need any riding experience. A safety briefing of about 15 minutes comes first, and a guide rides with the group in convoy. On the buggy, a guide on a motorbike leads the way.

A few common-sense habits help. Keep a safe distance from the vehicle in front, both for safety and to stay out of its dust. Do not film while you ride: stop, then take the photo. Drink water, especially in summer.

Agafay with kids

Children are welcome, and the camel is the most family-friendly activity we run. From age 5, with an adult, they can ride for an hour behind a Berber guide.

On the quad, under-16s ride as passengers behind an adult. Teenagers aged 16 and over can take their own quad.

For the evening, the dinner show under the stars is a big hit with children: music, the fire show and a meal in the tent. The honest drawback is the time. The evening packs bring you back around 11 pm, which is late for small children. With young kids, the Camel + Dinner show pack (€60) is usually the best combination. If you are unsure, message us on WhatsApp before booking and we will help you choose.

For hot days with children, the VIP Pool Day (€120, 9 am to 7 pm) mixes a pool, lunch, a guided quad ride and a sunset camel ride.

Food and dietary needs

On the evening packs, dinner is a traditional Moroccan meal served in the tent, with live music and a fire show. The Quad + Camel pack includes mint tea and pancakes in the tent, and the single quad and camel rides include a tea break. The VIP Pool Day includes a Moroccan lunch.

If you are vegetarian, have an allergy or any other dietary requirement, tell us when you book, on the form or on WhatsApp. We will check with the camp and confirm what can be arranged before your day.

Money and payment

Booking is simple. A 20% deposit by card or PayPal confirms your place, or you can pay in full online. The balance is paid on the day of the activity. Prices are per person in euros, except the buggy, which is priced per 2-seat vehicle.

A few general points about money in Morocco are worth knowing. The Moroccan dirham is a closed currency, so you generally cannot buy it before you travel; most visitors withdraw cash from ATMs once they arrive, and ATMs are easy to find in Marrakech. Cards are widely accepted in hotels and larger shops, but cash is still king in markets and for small purchases. If an ATM offers to convert your withdrawal into your home currency, decline and take dirhams; your bank’s rate is usually better. Keep a little cash on you for personal extras during your outing.

Taking good photos in Agafay

The desert is very photogenic, but it is also bright and dusty. A few tips:

  • Use the golden hour. The hour before sunset gives warm, soft light on the hills and long shadows. This is why the 4 pm departure is so popular.
  • Put the Atlas in the frame. The snowy peaks behind a camel caravan or a line of quads make the classic Agafay shot, especially in winter and spring.
  • Protect your gear. Dust gets everywhere on a quad. Keep your phone in a zipped pocket while riding and wipe the lens before shooting.
  • Shoot silhouettes at sunset. Put the sun behind the camels or riders and expose for the sky.
  • Turn the flash off in the tent. Candles and lanterns look better in low light. For the fire show, a phone’s night mode or a burst of shots works better than flash.
  • Stop to shoot. Never film while driving a quad or buggy. Your guide stops at the best viewpoints, including a panoramic photo stop on the buggy loop.

What happens if the weather turns

Rain is not common around Marrakech: the airport records around 30 rainy days in an average year, most of them between November and March, and summer is almost completely dry. When the weather does turn, our policy is simple: we offer free rescheduling to another day.

Separately, cancellation is free up to 24 hours before your activity. Message us on WhatsApp. If your dates are flexible, booking your desert outing early in your stay leaves room to move it if needed.

Getting there

Return transport from your hotel or riad in Marrakech city is included in every activity and pack. We confirm your pickup time and meeting point on WhatsApp after you book.

The drive to Agafay takes about 40 to 45 minutes. If your accommodation is outside Marrakech, a supplement applies depending on the distance.

You can also swap the shared transport for a private transfer: €80 per vehicle for 1 to 7 people. It is a good option for families and small groups who want their own vehicle. You can add it in the booking form.

FAQ

Is the Agafay Desert a sand desert?

No. Agafay is a stony desert of rolling hills, dry riverbeds and plateaus, with the Atlas Mountains on the horizon. The ground is hard and dusty rather than soft sand, which is why quads and buggies follow tracks and why closed shoes matter. If you want tall golden dunes, you need a multi-day trip to the Sahara, much further from Marrakech.

What should I wear for a quad or buggy ride in Agafay?

Closed shoes are required for both the quad and the buggy, and long trousers are a better choice than shorts. Add sunglasses, sunscreen and a scarf or buff against the dust. Helmet and goggles are provided for the quad. For an evening pack, bring a warm jacket or fleece for dinner, as the desert cools quickly after sunset.

What is the best time of day to visit Agafay?

The 4 pm departure is the most popular because it ends with the sunset over the hills and the Atlas. The 9 am departure is cooler, which makes it the better quad slot from June to September. If you want dinner and the show, the evening packs start at 4 pm and bring you back to your hotel around 11 pm.

Can children come on Agafay activities?

Yes. Children can ride a camel from age 5 with an adult. On the quad, you must be 16 to ride alone; younger children ride as passengers behind an adult. With young children, the Camel + Dinner show pack (€60) is usually the best fit, but the evening finishes late, so message us on WhatsApp for advice first.

What happens if the weather is bad on the day?

In bad weather we offer free rescheduling to another day. Separately, cancellation is free up to 24 hours before the activity; just let us know on WhatsApp. Rain is not frequent around Marrakech, but it does happen, mostly between November and March, so a flexible day in your plans is useful.

Do I pay everything online when I book?

No. A 20% deposit by card or PayPal confirms your booking, and you can pay in full online if you prefer. Otherwise the balance is paid on the day of the activity. Prices are per person in euros, except the buggy, which is priced per 2-seat vehicle. Hotel transfer from Marrakech city is included.
